Route Map of M Notes: M has a southern and western terminus, since the highway runs first north, then west, south, then west again, staying near the Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay shorelines for much of its length. As those with somewhat longer memories or those who are students of the Michigan state trunkline system may recall, there was a US in Michigan at one time. It was not until the early s that the US designation was extended northerly from Port Huron to the tip of the Thumb, where it ended at Port Austin.
In “State Trunkline Needs, — ,” a set of maps prepared by the State Highway Dept’s Office of Planning, Programming Division in showing possible additions, upgrades and improvements to the state trunkline system over the ensuing twenty years, MSHD staff recommended several upgrades to the route of M and the portion of US between Port Austin and Port Huron which would become M in during that timeframe.
Constructing a US freeway diverging from I at the wide spot in the curve west of the Water St interchange on the northwest side of Port Huron, continuing northerly, interchanging with M just west of the existing route of US now M , before swinging back to the northwest and shifting to a due northerly alignment at Lakeport, running parallel to the existing route about a mile inland.
The proposed freeway or expressway would have continued northerly into Sanilac Co, merging back into the existing route about a mile north of Port Sanilac. Much of the existing route of US was to have been transferred to local control with the exception of the portion south of M at Port Huron and the portion from M in Port Sanilac northerly to end of the proposed freeway, both of which were to have been retained as BUS US routings.
In , this proposal was shown on planning maps as a new-alignment “expanded arterial”—likely a limited-access, four-lane divided expressway with intersections at crossroads and interchanges at key junctions. These proposals were never acted upon.

Northwest What was once slated to be a controversial subdivision is now a unique island preserve thanks to the Little Traverse Conservancy. Oden Island, located south of the village of Oden, juts out into Crooked Lake and is the home to large old-growth trees and fragile wetlands. When a developer proposed crowding 34 homes on the east half of the island, the Conservancy orchestrated a response in that included an outpouring of support and donations from communities and families to protect the natural side of the island.
Today the acre preserve offers a parking area, nearly a mile of foot trails Heartland Tucked away on the east side of Alden, oblivious to most visitors who are mesmerized by Torch Lake to the west of town, is a small mountain with a short but interesting trail system. Coy Mountain Natural Area dates back to when Reuben Coy decided to preserve a ridge forested in virgin hardwoods that towered behind his gristmill.
It was the last remnant of the giant maples and beeches in a region that had been heavily clear cut by loggers. The acre tract remained in the Coy family until when Reubens daughter-in-law deeded the property to a group of trustees with the intentions of preserving Coy Mountain for the use and benefit of the Villagers of Alden and the surrounding comm
